SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Differences, Overlap and What to Prioritize

SEO, AEO and GEO are useful labels for different search goals, but they are not three independent switches that make a website visible. The practical question is where your audience looks for information and whether your pages genuinely help them. This comparison explains the terms and how to prioritize work without creating three duplicate content plans.

What the three terms mean

TermWorking meaningPractical question
SEOSearch engine optimization: improving a website’s discoverability and relevance in search. Can the right person find and use the right page?
AEOAnswer engine optimization: a common label for making answers easier to find and understand.Does the page answer a specific question clearly?
GEOGenerative engine optimization: a common label for visibility in AI-generated responses. Can an answer system discover and accurately describe the material?

These labels overlap. A clear page explaining a business workflow can help a person arriving from a conventional search result, a shared link or an AI-generated answer. Writing three versions of the same explanation does not create three distinct benefits.

Shared foundations come first

Begin with accessible public content, a stable URL and an accurate explanation of the subject. Give related pages useful links, and keep titles and visible information aligned. If a page is missing or inaccessible, a more fashionable optimization label does not resolve that problem.

For Google’s AI search features, the documented starting requirements remain its normal Search requirements. There is no special AI schema that guarantees inclusion. Other services have their own discovery and presentation behavior, so do not assume identical results everywhere.

Where AEO changes the writing task

AEO is a useful editorial lens when a visitor has a specific question. Give a direct answer, explain the important exceptions and then add the detail needed to act. Choose a table, short definition or procedure because it suits the question, not because a particular format promises selection.

For example, “Can a school management system print fee challans?” deserves an explanation of the actual output and a sample. It does not need a long introduction to every trend in education software. Read the AEO guide for an answer-focused page structure.

Where GEO adds an evaluation question

GEO focuses attention on whether an AI-generated response accurately mentions or cites your material. That is a useful observation, but a citation is not the same as an enquiry or a purchase. Results can vary by query, time and service.

Use the GEO guide for a way to evaluate discoverability, evidence and outcomes. Avoid claims that a keyword pattern, citation count or rigid paragraph length guarantees a recommendation.

Choose the next task from evidence

  • If an important page is not accessible or indexed, investigate the technical and content issue first.
  • If impressions come from irrelevant queries, clarify the audience and the page’s purpose.
  • If a page has visibility but few clicks, review its position, search intent and presentation together.
  • If visits do not become useful enquiries, check the offer and the contact experience.
  • If an AI response describes your product incorrectly, check whether your own public information is clear and consistent.

Apply this to a developer portfolio

A portfolio should make its work concrete. ScholarFlow describes school administration; DinePulse describes restaurant operations. These are more specific subjects than repeating “AI growth” across every page.

Start with the practical SEO checklist, then improve the question-and-answer clarity and the supporting evidence on the pages that matter. Measure what changes instead of treating a new acronym as a result.

Common questions

Do I need separate SEO, AEO and GEO pages for every service?

No. Create distinct pages when the user needs are distinct. A useful service page can answer questions and explain evidence without being duplicated under three labels.

Can a consultant promise AI citations?

A consultant can promise specified work and reporting. The selection of a source by an external search or answer system is not something the website owner controls.
